Be The Influence

For many people at university, sport is a crucial aspect of student life which can lead to lifelong relationships and incredible experiences. Socials can enrich your time with your club, where you can explore your creative side through fancy dress, or wonder how people you usually see in sweats are capable of dressing formally for formal events!

Research conducted by the NUS highlighted ‘lad culture’ as a rising cause of sexual harassment and prevailing sexism at university. It is a group or pack mentality residing predominantly within sports and alcohol centred activity, using ‘banter’ as a facade for sexist, homophobic and sometimes dangerous behaviour. Thought to have a major impact on sports teams due to its influential nature, ‘lad culture’ can have a significant impact on people’s personal and sporting lives.

‘Be The Influence’ is a campaign fronted by the Sports Executive within the University of Leicester Students’ Union aiming to eliminate such antisocial behaviour within sport. The Students’ Union has a zero tolerance stance towards antisocial behaviour, and this campaign is aiming to target the problems and their causes to produce positive outcomes and a better sporting environment.

‘Be The Influence’ hopes to:

  • Deter students from antisocial behaviour - sports players are representative of the student body, and because of this it is crucial that they behave in a responsible manner.

  • Increase the level of respect between players, both from the same sport and between sports.

  • Increase overall participation in sport by encouraging a welcoming atmosphere and deterring antisocial behaviour

  • Promote a “positive pact-mentality”, where team mates are positively encouraging one another.

  • Reduce the number of negative club related incidents occurring on sports nights at the Students Union, making the night safer and more enjoyable for all.

  • Provide a forum whereby any student can report club related incidents, and feel safe doing so.

The ‘Be The Influence’ campaign aims to tackle a pervasive problem that exists in a number of Sport Clubs at University. However the effectiveness of the campaign is reliant upon the strong support and understanding of all members of the student body, especially if you yourself are a member of sports team.

What can you do?

  • Club Captains of all teams are responsible for informing individual members of the initiative and to quite literally ‘be the influence’ on their peers. If you have any questions about the campaign, then your respective club captain will be able to answer these.

  • Look out for relevant talks and workshops, designed to educate students on how identify and tackle antisocial behaviour.

  • Educate yourselves about the problems that stem from antisocial behaviour and the wider effect that it has.

  • Utilise the services offered to ensure that any and all incidents are reported and consequently dealt with. The services provided are confidential; you will remain anonymous.

If you have any questions or feedback regarding the campaign, feel welcome to talk to any of the Sports Executive, who are spearheading the campaign and would love to hear from you.
