Cafe Volunteer - Christian Aid at Greenbelt

Details Hide[-]

The Greenbelt arts festival is a key event in Christian Aid’s calendar. It enables us to get our message across to festival-goers who (like us) are passionate about putting their faith into action to challenge global poverty. Volunteers are vital to making our presence at Greenbelt a success.

As a Greenbelt festival volunteer you will be part of a team and make a practical contribution to Christian Aid’s work. You’ll be engaging with festival-goers and getting our message across – and in between shifts you’ll also get some time to enjoy the festival.

What will I do?

  • be part of the team running the Christian Aid Café
  • have an active role in the café, either preparing food, operating tills and coffee machines, taking orders, clearing tables, serving customers and washing up.  Lots of washing up!
  • ensure a smooth flow of customers through the cafe
  • keep the area and tables tidy
  • keep an eye out for health and safety issues, notifying shift leaders
  • you may need to take on other tasks at short notice as and when needed!
  • there are a small number of café team leader roles available – please indicate on your application if you would like to be considered for one of these roles.

How much time do I give?

Volunteers are required to work a shift of around 6 hours each day as allocated, between the hours of 8am and 10pm.  Shifts can be swapped around but this must be done by team members in agreement with the on-site volunteer manager.

You will be required to arrive on-site at Greenbelt Festival, near Kettering, between 2pm and 8.30pm on Thursday 24th August.

You will need to be on-site until the end of your last shift, which may be at 9pm on Monday 28th August.  Volunteers will be able to stay onsite until Tuesday 29th August, and those doing so will be asked to assist with the breakdown and clearing of the Christian Aid venues on the Monday night / Tuesday morning.

What skills do I need?

  • flexibility, and a willingness to pitch in and help
  • a customer focused attitude
  • ability to work in a team and support others
  • experience in food service / preparation is beneficial, but not essential
  • a good sense of humour and an ability to deal with the unexpected!

What support will I receive?

  • training for your volunteering role at the start of the festival
  • support from your team leader
  • a weekend pass to the Greenbelt festival and food vouchers for meals redeemable on-site
  • travel expenses to/from Greenbelt festival, up to a maximum of £50 (following Christian Aid’s example of cheapest fares available, train journeys for preference, shared car journeys etc. The greener and cheaper, the better!)

Are there any other requirements?

  • Volunteers will need to bring their own tent and other camping equipment, and be prepared to camp at the festival
  • Volunteers need to be 18+ on arrival at the festival
  • Volunteers wishing to stay off-site may do so, at their own expense.  Daily travel to / from off-site accommodation will also be at the volunteer’s own expense.
  • You will able to arrive on-site at Greenbelt Festival between 2pm and 8.30pm on Thursday 24th August.
  • You will be committed to Christian Aid’s aims to eradicate poverty
  • You will feel comfortable in a faith-based arts festival environment

Deadline for applications

Applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis until all vacancies are filled.  There are expected to be around 30 vacancies on the café team.
